FDA Fires Another Warning Shot at Online Peptide Sellers, Targeting Royal Peptides Over Unapproved Weight-Loss and Incretin Drugs

WASHINGTON — In an expanding federal sweep against the direct-to-consumer peptide market, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a stern warning letter to the operators of royal-peptides.com, alleging the unlawful sale of unapproved injectable drugs including popular weight-loss and diabetes treatments.

The warning letter, dated August 24, 2026 (Reference Number: 734884), was addressed to Rocco Abate and Michael Fraunfelter following an agency investigation of their online storefront in July 2026. The action marks yet another blow in the FDA’s accelerating effort to dismantle online networks selling experimental and copycat compounds directly to the public under the guise of laboratory research.

At the center of the citation is an extensive lineup of injectables:

  • Tirzepatide and Semaglutide (the active ingredients behind commercial blockbusters like Mounjaro, Zepbound, and Ozempic)
  • Retatrutide (an experimental triple-agonist weight-loss peptide currently undergoing clinical trials)
  • SS-31 (Elamipretide)
  • PT-141 (Bremelanotide)
  • Tesamorelin
  • BIMORELIN (a proprietary blend combining Tesamorelin and Ipamorelin)

None of the finished formulations sold on the storefront hold approved New Drug Applications (NDAs) with the FDA, rendering their sale across state lines a direct violation of federal law.

Dismantling the ‘Research Only’ Cover

Much like other operators caught in the regulatory dragnet, royal-peptides.com attempted to insulate its sales behind blanket disclaimers stating that products were strictly “for research use only” and “not for human or animal consumption.”

Federal regulators, however, dismantled that defense by pointing to the website’s own promotional material. Product listings routinely highlighted clinical trial data, touting significant weight loss percentages—such as claiming tirzepatide delivers “up to 22.5% body weight reduction” and retatrutide triggers “up to 24.2% body weight reduction in just 48 weeks.” The site also highlighted benefits like “once-weekly injection for convenience,” appetite suppression, anti-aging, neuroprotection, and erectile dysfunction treatment.

Beyond the medical claims, investigators flagged tools designed specifically to help everyday consumers administer the products at home. The FDA noted that the storefront paired its vials with bacteriostatic water, a “peptide guide,” and an interactive “peptide calculator”—resources that clearly provided customers with the step-by-step means to prepare and dose injectable drugs for personal use.

Public Health Alarms Over Injectable Contaminants

The warning letter underscored the heightened dangers tied to unregulated injectables. Because these substances are administered via needle straight into body tissue or the bloodstream, they bypass the gut and immune defenses that normally block ingested toxins and microbes.

Unverified manufacturing standards, improper reconstitution, or compromised sterility can quickly lead to severe microbial infections, abscesses, or life-threatening systemic illness, the agency cautioned.

“These products are especially concerning from a public health perspective because injectable drug products can pose risks of serious harm to users,” wrote Captain Tina Smith, Director of the Office of Unapproved Drugs and Labeling Compliance at the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER).

Regulators gave the operators 15 business days from receipt of the letter to submit a detailed plan addressing the root causes of the violations and outlining steps to prevent their recurrence. The agency warned that a failure to correct the infractions swiftly could result in legal action without further notice, including federal seizure of inventory and court injunctions to halt operations permanently.
